China Time Zone: Beijing Time Nationwide
Why all of China uses UTC+8 (Beijing Time) with no DST, and local customs in western regions.
Mainland China uses **Beijing Time** (China Standard Time, CST) nationwide — IANA zone Asia/Shanghai, UTC+8, **no daylight saving**. Harbin and Urumqi share the same official clock, unlike the US or Russia with multiple zones.
History and unification
After 1949 China standardized on Beijing Time for rail, broadcast, and administration. Hong Kong (Asia/Hong_Kong) and Macau (Asia/Macau) are also UTC+8; Taiwan (Asia/Taipei) is UTC+8 without DST as well.
Western regions in practice
Xinjiang is geographically closer to UTC+6, but official time remains Beijing Time. Some residents use a local "Xinjiang time" (~2 hours behind Beijing) socially. For business and government, always use **Beijing Time**.
