Phone and Computer Time Zone Settings
How auto time zone works on iOS, Android, Windows, macOS — and travel glitches.
Your device clock comes from OS time zone settings. "Set automatically" uses location, cell, and NTP — usually correct, but border areas, cruise ships, VPNs, or VMs can glitch briefly, breaking alarms, calendars, and Time Zones in Calendar Invites display.
Platform notes
- iOS / Android: Settings → Date & time → Automatic (keep on while traveling)
- Windows: Settings → Time & language → Time zone; optional DST toggle
- macOS: System Settings → General → Date & time
- Linux servers: often UTC; apps localize in software
Troubleshooting
- Wrong calendar times: device zone vs Google/Outlook account zone
- Dual SIM: system zone wins, not carrier home country
- Remote work: VPN should not silently change IANA zone
- Verify against Countries or our Convert
Travel: Travel Time Zone Tips; developers: Unix Timestamps and UTC, What Is the IANA Time Zone Database.
