24-Hour Clock and Military Time
How to read 24-hour time, why aviation and medicine use it, and tips for international scheduling.
The 24-hour clock runs from 00:00 to 23:59 without AM/PM. It is standard across most of Europe and Asia; the US still uses 12-hour time in daily life, but aviation, military, healthcare, and IT prefer 24-hour format to avoid ambiguity.
Quick reference
- 00:00 = midnight
- 06:00 = 6:00 AM
- 12:00 = noon
- 13:00 = 1:00 PM
- 18:30 = 6:30 PM
- 23:59 = 11:59 PM
Why cross-border work uses it
Airlines, railways, and official notices almost always use 24-hour time. Writing "3:00" without AM/PM invites errors. Best practice: include 24-hour time plus IANA zone, e.g. "15:00 CST / 3:00 PM local."
